Side windows and rear glass

Smashed door glass, quarter glass, rear window. Fitting the new pane is one thing; cleaning up tempered glass is half the job.

Tempered glass, not laminated

That distinction explains everything else. A windshield is laminated glass: two sheets bonded to a plastic film, which lets it crack without falling apart — and lets it be repaired.

Side windows and rear glass are tempered. Designed to burst into thousands of small blunt fragments rather than sharp blades, they disintegrate all at once. There is nothing left to fill: a side window cannot be repaired, only replaced.

What we replace

  • Door glass, front and rear
  • Quarter glass — the small fixed panes behind the doors
  • Rear windows, including the defroster grid and its connectors
  • Tailgate glass on SUVs and wagons

The cleanup, which is the real half of the job

When door glass bursts, it does not just land on the seat. It drops down inside the door cavity, works under the seat rails, into the air vents and beneath the carpets.

If nobody goes in after it, fragments will keep falling out of the door panel every time you shut the door — for months. We vacuum the cavity, the cabin and the trunk before the new glass goes in.

If the part has to be ordered

Some windows are not stock items. When that happens we seal the opening temporarily, so rain, snow and curious hands stay outside until the appointment.

Worth knowing

  • All makes, all model years
  • Rear glass with defroster grid
  • Door cavity, cabin and trunk vacuumed
  • Temporary sealing if the part is on order
  • Available as mobile service

Is it the windshield?

Windshields follow different rules — they can often be repaired instead of replaced.

Frequently asked

What people ask us most

Can a cracked side window be repaired?

No. Tempered glass disintegrates entirely instead of cracking, so there is nothing to fill. A side window or rear window gets replaced.

My rear window has defroster lines. Is that a problem?

No. The replacement pane comes with its heating grid and connection points, and the defroster works as before.

There is glass everywhere inside my door. Is that normal?

It is what happens to any tempered pane, and it is part of the job. We vacuum the door cavity, the seat rails and the floor — otherwise fragments keep dropping out for months.

Can you come to me?

Yes. Most side window replacements work very well as mobile service.

My car was broken into. Is that covered?

Glass damage is generally covered by auto policies, vandalism included. Give us your policy number and we will check with you before starting.
